Jiangsu's Small-Product Export Surge: What Foreign Founders Can Learn From Q1-Q3 Trade Data

Jiangsu's foreign trade rose 29.8% year-on-year in the first three quarters to RMB 5.69 trillion, 11 percentage points above the national rate. ChinaMNC breaks down the small-product export categories—hotel linens, sleep aids, holiday goods and lotus root—and what they signal for foreign founders setting up or operating a company in China.

Jiangsu Trade Growth at a Glance

According to Nanjing Customs statistics, Jiangsu's total foreign trade imports and exports reached RMB 5.69 trillion in the first three quarters of this year, up 29.8% year-on-year. That growth rate is 11 percentage points higher than the national figure. Beyond large equipment, the province's export performance is also being driven by smaller consumer and industrial products—categories that offer useful lessons for foreign founders building sourcing, manufacturing or export operations in China.

Below is a breakdown of the product categories cited in the source and the practical takeaways for foreign-invested enterprises.

Hotel Linens: Quality Positioning and Tariff Preferences

Hotel linens have entered their annual peak export delivery season. The category's strong overseas sales reflect a broader shift in Jiangsu's light industry toward refined production and upgraded manufacturing.

At Jiangsu Kangnaixin Textile Technology Co., Ltd., raw materials pass through multiple stages of drawing and yarn twisting to optimize fabric. The company's customs affairs manager, Chen Qian, said its products are soft, skin-friendly and more wash-resistant, requiring gradual replacement only after about a year and a half of use. The company attributes this to producing consistently high-quality output from yarn fabric of the same density, which has helped it win orders from well-known hotel groups in China and abroad.

Chen added that a China–ASEAN Free Trade Area certificate of origin issued by Huai'an Customs reduced the tariff rate on its products from 12% to zero, significantly lowering customers' import costs and helping the company retain existing clients and open new markets. From January to August, the company's export value reached RMB 180 million.

The company also customizes products for different overseas markets. For Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa, it developed dedicated pool towels and colored towels that resist fading under intense tropical sunlight and pool conditions. For the high-end hotel market, it used proprietary deodorizing technology to develop a waterproof, fragrant down duvet core.

Sleep Products: Capturing Consumer Trends

As demand for quality sleep rises, more consumers in China and abroad are paying for sleep-aid products.

Suzhou Jili Silk Co., Ltd., a long-established enterprise in Zhenze, Wujiang, identified demand for comfortable, light-blocking sleep environments and developed a silk cooling weighted eye mask. General manager Zhu Wenchao said the mask suits fully dark sleep settings and combines cooling, breathability, softness and pressure relief. Since launch, monthly sales have consistently exceeded 100,000 units, and export value of silk eye masks more than doubled year-on-year in January–September. The company's foreign trade revenue has grown notably this year, with exports accounting for 65% of total sales, covering 46 countries and regions.

Suzhou Opple Lighting Co., Ltd. targeted consumers who prefer soft light and ambient atmospheres for sleep, moving beyond conventional lighting products. Its overseas supply chain head, Jiao Weide, said the company developed a patented water-lily-color light sleep-aid technology that extracts a special pale pink tone from the spectrum and optimizes spectral bands to support melatonin secretion and create a relaxed pre-sleep environment. He noted that the patented technology, combined with origin preferential policies, has kept the company's export momentum positive this year.

Seasonal Goods: Certificates, Speed and Trade Modes

Autumn is peak delivery season for Christmas items such as ribbons and bells. Toy and craft factories across Jiangsu are running sewing machines and packing lines to ship seasonal goods to global shelves.

Cost reduction can start with a single certificate. At Yangzhou Anbeisi Toys Co., Ltd., shelves are filled with alpacas in Santa hats and snowmen with scarves, while workers produce Christmas plush toys for the ASEAN market. With a China–ASEAN FTA certificate of origin issued by Yangzhou Customs, these plush toys receive a 10% tariff preference locally. Foreign trade manager Lu Chunhua said the company applied for 23 free trade agreement certificates of origin in the first three quarters, enjoying nearly RMB 300,000 in import-country tariff preferences. Yangzhou Customs supervised exports of toy products worth about RMB 1.52 billion and issued 367 FTA certificates of origin in the period.

Beyond policy cost relief, faster customs clearance is also critical. At Taizhou Feiyan Crafts Co., Ltd., workers are rushing to produce feather boas, angel wings and other Christmas-themed crafts. General manager Dai Xingquan said this is the tightest production period each year because customers must meet shipping schedules, and clients generally requested delivery one month earlier this year. Once the Christmas goods ship, the company will immediately switch to Easter products. In the first three quarters, Taizhou Customs supervised exports of Christmas decorations worth RMB 1.7378 million, up 96.17% year-on-year.

At Pengyunxin General Merchandise Store in Mocheng Street, Changshu, head Zhang Shuangshuang counted inventory among cartons, noting that ribbons and bells sell best and must be included in every export batch. Using market procurement trade, goods can be consolidated and packed without waiting and reach destinations in just over a month. Changshu Customs has created a dual-channel clearance model combining transit and integrated clearance, allowing market procurement goods to be exported via the nearest of 149 ports nationwide, with the fastest declaration-to-release time of just 22 minutes.

Agricultural Processing: Upgrading From Raw to Value-Added

In Baoying County, harvesting is underway across thousands of hectares of lotus ponds. Fresh lotus root is transported directly to the processing workshop of Yangzhou Tiancheng Food Co., Ltd. Foreign trade manager Diao Yuhong said the company's lotus root product exports exceeded RMB 28 million in the first three quarters, with orders booked into early next year and strong market demand. Yangzhou Customs supervised exports of lotus root and its products worth over RMB 100 million in the period, up about 3% year-on-year.

The sector is shifting from selling fresh lotus root as a primary product toward deeper processing. A single lotus root can now become boiled, salted or quick-frozen products sold to Southeast Asia, Europe and the US.
